Initiatives

Kolping India programs are well structured into six components that complement each other to improve the quality of life of every individual member of the Kolping Family. Gender, Environment and Child Rights are the cross-cutting issues that Kolping India tries to incorporate into all development initiatives. Kolping India focuses on the growth of every individual member and the groups which are known as Kolping Families through ‘self-help strategy’. Kolping Falmilies acts as a source of strength extending its support and motivation to the well-being of each & every member.

Livelihood

Kolping Families are encouraged to initiate income generation activities, to maximize their family income and thereby enhancing the quality of life. Training on entrepreneurship and skill development enable the Kolping members to identify appropriate economic activities suitable to them. Rural population who have been predominately involved in agriculture and livestock husbandry are introduced to alternative and complementary income generation activities, either individually or collectively. Majority of them perceive their small enterprises as profitable and sustainable.

Education Support

The program focuses on supporting either Kolping Family association member or children of Kolping Family association member to pursue job oriented courses. Since 2000, Kolping India has supported youths to pursue courses that eventually resulted in gainful employment in the public and private sectors. This financial support was also extended to professional and degree courses since 2010.

Shelter Program

Right to shelter has been recognized as one the fundamental rights of every human being. The habitat always been deemed as symbol of family identity. Owning a house therefore remains a dream for members who have no proper housing. Realizing the basic needs of each member, Kolping India has come forward to support the members who have no proper shelter. Beneficiaries are motivated to avail Government Housing schemes through Panchayat Raj Institutions.

Infrastructure Support

As part of sustainability measures, Kolping India has supported its partners to develop Infrastructures that generate regular income to facilitate development activities in the respective Kolping regions. The support to infrastructure development has helped the partners to identify & construct income generating infrastructural facilities. The programme is designed to encourage the partner organizations to generate local income for development activities without further support from outside sources in future. It aims at bringing steady stream of income to manage their development activities and would reduce the dependency on external sources. Kolping India has so far supported 30 partners to develop infrastructures so as to generate income for development activities.

Kolping Cares

Kopling India has responded to emergency situations & natural disasters by providing solace and timely help to affected victims and their families. Kolping India helped the victims of the disaster to reconstruct their lives. Our recent emergency projects includes supporting migrant labourers and pavement dwellers during the totallocak down period due to Covid pandemic, Nivar Cyclone Relief and helping homeless persons to protect them from cold winter.

The Kolping Disaster Relief Endowment Fund (KDREF) was created in 2010 to help members during crisis situations and natural disasters. This program also involves engaging members in promoting natural resource management. A death relief fund has been extended to the family of the Kolping member with Rs.5000 in case of death of a member.

Community Health

The Kolping India program facilitates Kolping members to construct house-hold toilets. Since the inception of Sanitation Assistance Project in 2014, Kolping India has supported for the construction of 3291 individual toilets until 2020.

Thalir is a unique project of Kolping India that focuses on promoting healthy life style in harmony with nature and effective use of plants & herbs for the complete human well-being. Kolping India has temporarily allocated a portion of land at its site at Keezhambi village near Kanchipuram for nurturing medicinal herbs. At present the Herbarium at Thalir, houses 200 species of herbs and has just started production of herbal oils. The Herbarium which is established at the strategic point near the junction of Chennai-Bangalore National Highway and Kancheepuram-Vellore State Highway attracts the local villagers and health conscious highway users. Kancheepuram draws maximum tourists because of its heritage and pilgrimage value. This provides scope for greater reach beyond the local areas.

Millennium Villages – a special project on Child Rights

The Child-centric project supported by Kolping – Augsburg and Bavarian State Chancellery, has been implemented in Bangalore and Udhagamandalam regions. The project activities includes assisting school children after school hours to revise their lessons, providing study materials, sensitizing the parents on Child Rights and training of evening class teachers. Totally 370 children has taken active part in the project through nine service delivery centres that are equipped with play & education materials. Child Rights and IEC materials have been prepared in English and local languages to create awareness among Kolping members.
